Direct Service Projects

Carbondale Main Street

Mission: To promote and improve downtown Carbondale

Project Duties: Volunteers will help beautify downtown Carbondale! They will participate in a large cleanup and planting day initiative.

Green Earth, Inc.

Mission: To preserve natural areas for the benefit of the people of Carbondale, IL and to make these areas available for education and non-consumptive recreational pursuits.

Project Duties: Project work will involve either mainenance and/or improvements to hiking trails or habitat improvement work (e.g., removing invasive plants). Both types of projects occur outdoors within nature preserves. Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants and long sleeves for working within the woodland and must wear closed toe shoes. Tools, gloves, bug spray, water, and snacks will be provided.

Stay Safe Family Fun Fest

Mission: The Mission of the Jackson County Healthy Communities Coalition (organizer of the Stay Safe Family Fun Fest) is to serve as a catalyst for improving the health and overall quality of life of Jackson County residents by promoting healthy lifestyles, encouraging positive youth development, decreasing substances abuse, improving mental health, and increasing access to health care.

Project Duties: Pre-event preparation (e.g., activity set-up, staging) for event activities as developed by various co-sponsoring agencies. Volunteers will be assigned to a designated agency/activity to provide assistance with activities for community residents that promote health and wellbeing through active engagement with participants, providing education and assisting with activities. Post-event (activity breakdown) assist with the breakdown of activities and loading of materials for transport back to agencies. 

For Kids' Sake

Mission: For Kids' Sake mission is to create a comprehensive international fundraising program to support service projects that safeguard the education and well-being of thousands of students and orphans in Bangladesh. 

Project Duties: Volunteers will help prepare for the 17th Annual Art Auction. Responsibilities will vary.

Touch of Nature

Mission: The mission of Touch of Nature Environmental Center is to enhance learning, promote professional development, encourage personal and interpersonal development, and increase environmental awareness.

Project Duties: Camp clean up and preparation and trail building. Volunteers will pick up trash and debris around the two camps as well as weather protect some of the outdoor wood structures. Volunteers will also work with staff to clean and build trails.

Keep Carbondale Beautiful

Mission: Keep Carbondale Beautiful initiates, plans, and directs cooperative efforts in litter control, recycling, community beautification, and environmental education.

Project Duties: City-wide cleanup. Volunteers will be assinged to locations across Carbondale to collect litter and recyclables.

Autism Society of Illinois-Southern Illinois Chapter

Mission: Improving the lives of those affected by autism.

Project Duties: Kick-off Autism Awareness Week at Kroger and Walmart.

Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale

Mission: To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as caring, responsible and productive citizens.

Project Duties: Volunteers will help with cleaning and revitalizing the Carbondale Boys and Girls Club.

American Cancer Society

Mission: The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Project Duties: Volunteers will help with a 5K. Duties will include setup/registration, water stations, activity stations and cleanup.

Humane Society

Mission: The Humane Society of Southern Illinois has been in operation since 1956.  Since the beginning we have been available to the community trying to make a difference for the animals of Southern Illinois.   Stressing the importance of spay and neuter and overall animal care.  Providing a safe haven for animals who have become lost and a centralized place for owners to look for them and finding forever homes for homeless pets. 

Project Duties: Animal care, painting, yard work and cleaning

SIU's Leadership Development Program

Mission: In coordination with SIU's Forestry Department volunteers will help reviatlize Campus Lake by planting cypress trees.

Project Duties: Volunteers will either help move the tree saplings to the correct location, dig the hole for the tree, plant the tree, or reseal the hold around the tree roots.

Indirect Service Projects

SIU Sustainability Office

Mission: The Sustainability Office at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to empowering a culture of sustainability through collaborative campus-based solutions across academics, operations, research and campus life. 

Project Duties: Volunteers will collect and sort donated items (food, books, clothing, etc) from the donation drive. 

Student Center Craft Shop

Mission: Not Listed

Project Duties: Making and distributing clay coin awards for random acts of kindness. Birdhouse making, woodworking, and pining as well as bicycle repair and registration.

Wesley Food Pantry

Mission: Wesley Food Panty’s mission is to help families and students in need.

Project Duties: Volunteers will be packing rice for food pantries in Carbondale.  We will take 50 pounds of rice and bag them in one pound bags. 

Wesley Foundation, Project 1

Mission: Wesley Foundation’s mission is to help families and students in need.

Project Duties: Volunteers will assemble school supply kits for students in need. 

Wesley Foundation, Project 2

Mission: Wesley Foundation’s mission is to help families and students in need.

Project Duties: Volunteers will create cards for veterans.

American Red Cross

Mission: The American Red Cross prevents an alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. 

Project Duties: Volunteers will register blood donors, provide refreshments, donate blood and otherwise assist Red Cross staff.

First Responder Appreciation

Mission: The Big Event Executive Committee wants to express its appreciation to local firefighters for their service to our community.

Project Duties: Volunteers will make appreciation packets of cards and snacks for firefighters.

Veteran Appreciation

Mission: Students and staff would like to say "Thank you" to area and campus veterans for their service to our country.  

Project Duties: Volunteers will make thank you cards for veterans.

From Bags to Beds

Mission: To help people with insecure housing.

Project Duties: Volunteers will make mats for the homeless out of recycled plastic bags.
